Founded on November 29, 1950, Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) is affiliated to China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC). It is the earliest founded R&D institute in marine equipment overall design, with the most extensive business scope and the most complete spectrum of products. It is widely recognized as the Cradle of Chinese Ship Design.
Since its founding, MARIC has independently developed more than1,300 items of civil ships, offshore engineering, and high-end ship equipment. Many of its scientific research achievements and ship products have reached top levels in the industry at home and abroad, creating over 100 "firsts" in China. Furthermore, MARIC has received over 600 scientific and technological awards, including 4 special prizes and 10 first prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
MARIC, the pioneer of civilian ship design in New China, developed China’s first 10,000-ton ocean-going ship “Dongfeng,” its first internationally compliant export bulk carrier “Changcheng,” and the “Yuehai Tie No. 1” rail ferry — ending the era of no train access to Hainan.
MARIC designs full-chain offshore oil & gas equipment, including seismic vessels, drill ships, FPSOs, and platforms. Its “Ocean Oil 981” — a National Science & Technology Progress Special Prize winner — set multiple China and world firsts.
MARIC’s Waterjet Propulsion Division, after 50+ years, is China’s largest center for waterjet R&D, manufacturing, and system integration.
