Founded on November 29, 1950, Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) is affiliated to China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC). It is the earliest founded R&D institute in marine equipment overall design, with the most extensive business scope and the most complete spectrum of products. It is widely recognized as the Cradle of Chinese Ship Design.
Since its founding, MARIC has independently developed more than1,300 items of civil ships, offshore engineering, and high-end ship equipment. Many of its scientific research achievements and ship products have reached top levels in the industry at home and abroad, creating over 100 "firsts" in China. Furthermore, MARIC has received over 600 scientific and technological awards, including 4 special prizes and 10 first prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
MARIC serves as the supporting institute for the National Engineering Research Center for Ship and Ocean Engineering Design Technology and is an esteemed member of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) and the International Ship and Offshore Structure Congress (ISSC). It is also recognized as a leading institution for master's and doctoral training in fluid mechanics, ship and marine structure design and manufacturing, with a dedicated postdoctoral research center. With a commitment to first-class technology and exceptional service, MARIC provides high-quality ship and offshore engineering equipment that is economical, safe and environmentally friendly.
MARIC has established a relatively comprehensive technical discipline system. It is an approved institution for awarding master’s and doctoral degrees (in Ship and Marine Structure Design and Manufacturing, Fluid Mechanics) by the State Council, and also a postdoctoral research station officially approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China. The institute currently has 2 national-level talents, 1 National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, 4 “Master Naval Architects” awarded by the China Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, 3 recipients of the Xin Yixin Award for Innovation in Ship and Ocean Engineering, and 9 Shanghai Leading Talents。It has gradually established a balanced and sustainably developing talent pipeline for high-level leading talents.
The Central People's Government Heavy Industry Department established the Shipbuilding Industry Bureau in Shanghai. In November, the bureau set up a Technical Office, with its office located at Sichuan Middle Road 670, Resource Building, Shanghai. The director was Mr. Xin Yixin. On November 29, the Technical Office established a Design Group, which is considered the predecessor of MARIC.

The Design Group of the Technical Office was renamed as the Ship Product Design Office. In May 1954, part of the personnel from the Ship Product Design Office were separated to establish a Ship Product Design Sub-office. In August 1955, the Design Office and Design Sub-office were renamed as the Second Ship Product Design Studio and the First Ship Product Design Studio, respectively. After 1956, the Shipbuilding Industry Bureau selected technicians from these studios to establish the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Ship Product Design Studios.
In 1957, Academician Xu Xueyan discussed drawings with Soviet expert Krilov.
The unit relocated to the compound at Gaoxiong Road 171.

It was designated as one of the first 15 open units under the Sixth Machinery Industry Ministry. In September 1978, it officially joined the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC), becoming one of the first three Chinese member units to participate in ITTC.

The name was changed to "Marine Design & Research Institute of China" (MARIC). In May 1982, as part of industrial ministry reforms, the State Council established the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) by merging units from the Sixth Machinery Industry Ministry and some enterprises from the Ministry of Communications. MARIC was placed under the leadership of CSSC.

The scientific research building at South Xizang Road 1688 was officially put into use, serving as MARIC's primary office space for nearly 30 years.
The world's only large towing tank with the capability to generate cross waves and oblique waves was completed.

MARIC was first awarded the title of "National Civilized Unit".
Approved by the State Council, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) were reorganized into a new entity, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited. MARIC became a subsidiary of this new group.
